The new season kicked off in traditional style on Thursday night with the defending Superbowl Champions' Indianapolis thrashing the New Orleans Saints 41-10.

For those of you that haven't got Sky and you like the game, a three minute highlight video is available on nfl.com, which is nice..

For those of you that have got Sky but choose not to watch the sport, I'm surprised you got this far down the post..

Junior Seau in the back field, Teddy fit again, and Brady at the helm, could it be four in seven?

Week 2 round up, courtesy of the Beeb:

The New England Patriots put a week of controversy behind them to beat the San Diego Chargers 38-14 on Sunday.
Patriots coach Bill Belichick was hit by a $500,000 fine and the loss of a 2008 draft pick after he recorded opposing coaches' signals on video.

But that had little effect on the team as quarterback Tom Brady threw three touchdowns in front of a loyal crowd.

Elsewhere Green Bay quarterback Brett Favre posted a NFL win record to help secure a win over New York Giants.

The Packers 35-13 triumph was Favre's 149th win as a quarterback which broke the milestone he shared with former Denver Bronco's quarterback John Elway.

"Maybe one day down the road it will mean a lot," Favre said.

"But the most important game is the next game. I'm proud to have played in a lot of games."

The Giants led 10-7 at half-time but Favre took over in the second half, throwing three touchdown passes and finishing 29-of-38 for 286 yards.

The three touchdowns give Favre 417 for his career, leaving him just three shy of former Miami Dolphin Dan Marino's record.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy said: "The all-time anything in this league is such a monumental achievement. One hundred forty nine wins speak for itself."

In other matches the Cleveland Browns recorded a huge 51-45 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.

It marked just the third game in NFL history that two teams combined for 11 or more touchdown passes.

In Pittsburgh, Ben Roethlisberger threw for 242 yards and a touchdown as the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Buffalo Bills 26-3.

And the Super Bowl champions Indianapolis Colts held off the Tennessee Titans 22-20, with quarterback Peyton Manning passing for 312 yards and a touchdown.

Other results:

Carolina Panthers 21-34 Houston Texans
Jacksonville Jaguars 13-7 Atlanta Falcons
St. Louis Rams 16-17 San Francisco 49ers
Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-14 New Orleans Saints
The Arizona Cardinals 23-20 Seattle Seahawks
Chicago Bears 20-10 Kansas City Chiefs
Detroit Lions 20-17 Minnesota Vikings
Miami Dolphins 20-37 Dallas Cowboys
Baltimore Ravens 20-13 New York Jets
Denver Broncos 23-20 Oakland Raiders

Looks like The pats are going to be penalised with a first round draft pick for 2008 doesn't it, John?

I didn't fancy the Pats to do much this year but with the new signings firing on all cylinders it's looking like it could be four in seven?

Yes, and yes. muching_out.gif

I remember seeing Junior Seau when he first joined the Chargers. Still looks a decent player even now doesn't he, and that Randy Moss can catch a ball or seventeen, what?

It was too tight anyway, John.

Money is piling in for the Pats to win the Superbowl. Currently 7-2 over here..
Panja
I watched the Pats demolition of the wannabe dallas cowboys last week. Nobody fit in the backfield which meant Brady had to go airborne, throwing touchdowns for fun all afternoon..

This week they go to Miami, who could almost be described as a bogie team in that they're one of the franchises that hasn't been mugged on a regular basis by the Foxboro gang.
Boz
And with Miami 0-6, could be a fairly easy outing...

That's a bit like Blues going Mansfield. Somehow we find a way to lose.

Cue the ring announcer and prepare for the main event By Vic Carucci | NFL.com

The heavyweights threw their weight around with a vengeance.

In the process, the New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts have set the stage for one of the most highly anticipated regular-season games in NFL history.

Was there really ever any doubt that these teams would square off at the RCA Dome in Week 9 as the last of the league's unbeatens?

Sure, there might have been a fleeting thought that the Washington Redskins' talented defensive backs could somehow do what none of the Patriots' previous opponents have done this season and find a way to shut down Tom Brady and his absurdly productive and explosive receivers. Of course, it never came close to happening.

Oh, maybe there was a delusional daydream that 43-year-old Vinny Testaverde could somehow recapture enough of his youth to allow the Carolina Panthers to trip up the Colts. And, of course, that never came close to happening, either. Testaverde wasn't even able to finish the game because of an ankle injury.

No, the pieces have fallen into place perfectly to give us not only a potential preview of the 2007 AFC Championship Game but, for all practical purposes, the defacto Super Bowl XLII.

The 8-0 Patriots and 7-0 Colts actually couldn't have done a better job of making it a reality with their respective poundings of the Redskins (52-7) and Panthers (31-7).

They are the two best teams in the NFL, period. Don't bother trying to make a case about any other club in the AFC (a list would begin and end with the Pittsburgh Steelers). And, please, please, don't even attempt to bring an NFC team into the discussion.

Not the Dallas Cowboys. Not the New York Giants. Not the Green Bay Packers. None is the competitive equal of the Patriots or Colts.

This is a two-horse race, and we're going to get a treat of a lifetime when these thoroughbreds go head-to-head.

We have an entire week to dissect the comparative skills of Brady, who threw for three touchdowns and ran for two against the Redskins, and Peyton Manning, who threw for two scores against the Panthers. Is there even an argument that Brady, with an NFL-best 30 touchdown passes for the season, is the best quarterback in the NFL? Would Manning, who was without injured Marvin Harrison against Carolina, be putting up similar numbers if he had Randy Moss in his arsenal?

We have an entire week to dissect the comparative talents of the Colts' and Patriots' defenses, which entered Week 8 ranked third and fourth in the league, respectively. Will Brady have his problems facing what was, entering Week 8, the top pass defense in the NFL? Is Manning going to be able to handle Bill Belichick's chameleon-like defensive scheme that always seems to adapt itself perfectly to each opponent and every situation while causing all sorts of confusion for the quarterback?

I can't wait to get started.

The 47 men, aged 18-23, were all American Football players who previously played at the high school (secondary school) level but had failed to be picked for their university’s team and were now cheerleaders instead. They were at various universities from the American south, Mid-West, west and north west.

Not exactly the most representative polls about sports players I've ever seen. Not sure how you'd make the transition from gridiron player to cheerleader either.

Mick's just having a dig because it's a man's sport is all, DaveyK..

I spotted it on .com, I certainly wouldn't be caught searching for stuff like that on the internet.....American Football, I mean. The article seems to be a uni piss-take of the sport. I do think they're pretty much wasting their time promoting it over here though. They (whoever 'they' are) have a go every few years or so. The last effort was an almost successful attempt to start a league but now enough people are prepared to part with 50-60 quid a month to stare at the square box in the corner, there seems to be a fresh incentive to pull viewers.

I tend to completely blank things that I have no interest in, I know there was a game at Wmebley the weekend but I couldn't tell you who played. I only found out yesterday that it was a real league game, not an exhibition match. A couple of years ago I'd have said that that was bizarre but nothing surprises me in tv sport world now and it goes part way to explaining the amount of foreign interest in football, real football I mean. The Beatles may have been the first scousers to play at The Shea Stadium but I doubt they'll be the last.*

Pats should be at home for the AFC title too, and Boston will be a tad nippy in January..

Don't write off The Packers yet.Nosireebob.
Since I got Sky plus I'm an expert on American Football,or Gridiron as it's known in American Football quarters. The quarters are better known in American football as the quarterbacks and also in America there is a coin that's called a quarter, although I'm not sure if this is the coin that's tossed prior to kick off.Confusing isn't it?

Actually I've just started getting interested in Gridiron (American Football - see above) again after it was taken off Channel 4 many moons ago and I was quite literally gobsmacked to see that Brett Favre was still playing, and playing damn well lately toboot.Don't know why but I like the Green Bay Packers,me.

Panja

The Green bay packers are popular in the American working class quarters because they're blue collar, even though they wear green, hence the name, although they're not geographically situated in a bay, and to my knowledge I don't think any of the players have got jobs as packers.

Come to think of it, it is a bit confusing isn't it?

JohnBaker
Seahawks now 6 and 4! . . . .

Nah, sorry, ain't gonna happen Baker.

poster_oops.gif

Panja

The Patriot steamroller keeps on rolling? Moss catches three , no, make that four, touchdown receptions.....in the first half. Brady now has 38 throws for scores and needs just 11 more from six games to beat Manning's record, Moss needs 7 more touchdowns to beat what was (once )considered to be an unattainable 22 held by Jerry Rice.

Ouch!

Panja

And on the other side of the coin....

Michael Vick

He should serve the five years for that, the git..

Watched The Packers tame the Detroit Lions last night in the Thanksgiving day game.Although they let the Lions back into the game in the 4th quarter there was never any doubt that the Green Bay boys would make it 10-1 for the season so far,and in some style too.
Brett Favre, after all these years, still has a fantastic arm.He also has an eye for a pass, the legs to see him through another season and enough heart to carry the fight through to the end.So I think you'll agree that, with all of these body parts, he really is the complete quarter back !
He also set a new Packers record of 20 consecutive completions last night.A bootiful performance.

Well close season without the play-offs might cause the shake up that is possibly needed with them. McNabb is a spent force.

Vick goes down then? Unbelievable really. He signed a big money contract three years ago which should have set him up for life, now his ex-emplyers are after getting the cash back..

On a lighter note, the unstoppable Patriots are proving to be, well, unstoppable..

Vs Pittsburg

Enjoy..
Panja

I confess to being a little bit nervous watching (through my laptop) the Patriots go 14-0 last night. The swirling wind made it difficult for Brady to throw, instead relying on their not so potent running game.

Still, they're only the second team in history to go this far unbeaten and next week we play the only other team that did it, and Miami are shite this year so it should be 15-0.

JohnBaker
They went 16-0 on the season, and it's just a matter of who they're going to beat in the Superbowl really. Now we'll never keep Panj quiet.

Talking of the NFL, I've just moved into a huge short term rental in Boise, and my neighbour is a talent scout for the Jacksonville Jaguars. And i thought I had a good number.

Panja

Ooooh, I'm all abuzz with it all, John boy..

I watched the Pats v Giants game on the live stream through the NFL website, edge of the seat stuff throughout so it was. Greta to see Tom and Randy get their respective touchdown records although Moss's record of 23 touchdowns took him 16 games whereas Jerry Rice caught 22 in 12 due to the strike.

Strangely enough, talking about Jacksonville, my one concern for New England is the Jaguars. I think they may have the running game that could not only keep Brady off the pitch but could score points too.

I'll let my neighbour know. I'm sure he'll pass it on.

By the way, he flies his Jaguars flag on game days. My Blues flag on the other hand disintegrated in 1902 after 30 years without winning a major trophy. I've got through a lot of flags since then.
Panja

The Jaguars go through then John, as do your never say die or win the big one Seahawks. Pittsburgh blew it on that fourth and two play when Garrard scrambled for 32 yards. I'm getting very nervous about the Pats havin gto play Jacksonville.

Very nervous.

Of the two games last night, there were nine interceptions thrown! That's one more than what Brady threw all year that is you know..

Fancy your chances against Green Bay then or what? This could be Favre's last year if he gets to Phoenix couldn't it?
JohnBaker
Favre. Yeh, could be his last year. Me missus wants 'im when Green Bay are done with his body.

The Pats. Fret ye knot, their first string have the Bowl all tied up.

The Seahawks. Suddenly the defence can play again. Will they have the honour of losing to the Pats in the final?
